About the Initiative

Lepidoptera Poloniae is a country-wide scientific initiative created within the Polish Biodiversity Information Network (KSIB), in cooperation of the University of Warsaw and the Museum and Institute of Zoology PAS. It brought together specialists, both professionals and amateur entomologists. We cooperate also with the Polish Entomological Society.

Aims and scope of activities

Our goal is to create a complete and up-to-date source of knowledge on lepidopteran fauna of Poland. We use all available documented information on distribution and biology of the species. The main sources are scientific papers, specimens in collections and photographs documenting observations. The results are available by the database Biodiversity Map and as standard publications.

The Database

The starting point for collecting data was the checklist of butterflies and moths, prepared by Jarosław Buszko. This is a taxonomical basis for all data on distribution of this group in Poland. The first important part of information comes from "Distributional Atlas of Butterlies of Poland" (Buszko 1997) that was included into the Biodiversity Map system. Currently, data from other sources are being collected.
